SEO News: Hummingbird Algorithm and Encrypted Search

There are two big news items now being discussed in the SEO community: a new Google search algorithm called “Hummingbird” and the encryption of all search data that Google recently announced.

The Hummingbird algorithm will better focus on the meaning behind the words. However, it still uses PageRank along with other factors like whether Google believes a page is of good quality, the words used on it, etc. Penguin and Panda also stay intact. Hummingbird is a brand new search algorithm, though it continues to use some of the same parts of the old, like Penguin and Panda. This means that the SEO guidance remains the same: build quality websites with unique informative content and receive natural backlinks.

Do Google+ Shares Help You to Rank Higher?

Social networks are full of fake accounts and bought ‘likes’ and ‘+1s’. Digital marketers settled in Google+ and Facebook after some articles, showing a correlation between Google +1s and Google’s search rankings were published. However, Matt Cutts said:

“If you make compelling content, people will link to it, like it, share it on Facebook, +1 it, etc. But that doesn’t mean that Google is using those signals in our ranking. Rather than chasing +1s of content, your time is much better spent making great content.”

The question whether Google+ shares affects ranking has been discussed in SEO blogs often. An interesting study was conducted by Eric Enge, the President of Stone Temple Consulting. SEO News: AdWords, Link Schemes and Twitter Search

Google announced an update that changes how each keyword’s 1-10 numeric Quality Score is reported in AdWords. They say that, now, the Quality Score in your reports reflects the factors that influence the visibility and expected performance of your ads. However, the way the quality score is calculated isn’t changing, so ad performance won’t be affected by the new reporting.

Google says they are unifying all their AdWords display tools in one easy and streamlined location. The Contextual Targeting Tool, the Placement Tool and the Google Ad Planner are now moved to the new Google Display Planner. Google says this will let you add all the keywords, placements or other targeting ideas you choose directly into your campaigns with just one click.
